Franklin County’s COVID cases up 40.9%; Ohio cases surge 43.7%

New coronavirus cases leaped in Ohio in the week ending Sunday, rising 43.7% as 2,842 cases were reported. The previous week had 1,978 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Ohio ranked 35th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States increased 66% from the week before, with 226,012 cases reported. With 3.51% of the country’s population, Ohio had 1.26% of the country’s cases in the last week. Across the country, 50 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Many places did not report cases and deaths around the Fourth of July, which would shift those cases into the following week and make week-to-week comparisons inaccurate.

Franklin County reported 286 cases and four deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 203 cases and four deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 129,725 cases and 1,491 deaths.

Delaware County reported 48 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 39 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 19,013 cases and 137 deaths.

Fairfield County reported 39 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 33 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 16,678 cases and 207 deaths.

Licking County reported 37 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 18 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 16,754 cases and 226 deaths.

Pickaway County reported 15 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 12 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 8,708 cases and 122 deaths.

Union County reported 14 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported nine cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 5,882 cases and 49 deaths.

Within Ohio, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Muskingum, Gallia and Lawrence counties. Adding the most new cases overall were Cuyahoga County, with 309 cases; Franklin County, with 286 cases; and Montgomery County, with 229. Weekly case counts rose in 60 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week’s pace were in Cuyahoga, Montgomery and Franklin counties.

Ohio ranked 35th among states in share of people receiving at least one shot, with 49% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 56%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.

In the week ending Sunday, Ohio reported administering another 77,923 vaccine doses, including 36,577 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 78,432 vaccine doses, including 32,612 first doses. In all, Ohio reported it has administered 10,913,658 total doses.

Across Ohio, cases fell in 23 counties, with the best declines in Coshocton, Paulding and Monroe counties.

In Ohio, 57 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, zero people were were reported dead.

A total of 1,117,109 people in Ohio have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 20,437 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 34,079,960 people have tested positive and 609,019 people have died.
