LouVax-Mobile

The LouVax team has done an amazing job caring for tens of thousands of Louisvillians in a drive-through vaccination site. As a health department, our mission is to serve those at the highest risk and those who encounter the most barriers to access care.

With the many options for people to get vaccinated, the decision has been made to pivot our resources towards a new venture, LouVax-Mobile. Each mobile mission is tailored to a specific group and may focus on a neighborhood, a demographic, or an organization.

Are COVID-19 vaccines safe and effective?

Yes. Three vaccines have been approved by the FDA after extensive clinical trials involving many thousands of participants, including from racial and ethnic minorities. All three federally approved vaccines are effective at preventing COVID-19. The trials and approval process was designed carefully and with very strict standards to keep us all safe.

How many doses of the vaccine is required?

Currently two of the authorized vaccines to prevent COVID-19 in the United States require 2 doses to get the most protection. A third authorized vaccine only requires 1 dose.

Pfizer-BioNTech doses should be given 3 weeks (21 days) apart.
Moderna doses should be given 1 month (28 days) apart.
- The second doses should be administered as close to the recommended interval as possible. However, second doses administered within 4 days prior and up to 42 days after recommended date are considered valid, safe and effective. When it’s time for your second dose, you will be contacted directly by the organization who administered your first dose for appointment scheduling.

Please note: In Louisville, you must receive your second dose of the vaccine from the provider who gave you your first dose.

Which COVID-19 Vaccine will I receive?

All three vaccines are available in Jefferson County.

Please know that the supply of the Janssen vaccine is still very limited.

Should I expect side effects from vaccine shots?

Some patients experience mild soreness at the injection site. There have also been reports of fevers and achiness after being vaccinated. Serious problems from vaccination can happen, but they are rare.

If you get a COVID-19 vaccine and you think you might be having a severe allergic reaction after leaving the vaccination site, seek immediate medical care by calling 911.

Who should not get the COVID-19 vaccine?

If you have a history of anaphylaxis or severe allergic reactions, talk with your healthcare provider to determine if vaccination is safe for you.

You should not receive the covid vaccine if:

You are currently ill, including respiratory symptoms or have a fever greater than 100.5°F
Received another vaccine (any, including flu) within the previous 14 days
Recently diagnosed with COVID-19 infection:
- If you were discharged from the hospital less than 30 days from your scheduled vaccine appointment
- If you tested positive for covid 19 or had symptoms of covid 19 less than 14 days ago
If you received your first Moderna dose less than 24 days ago I
f you received your first Pfizer dose less than 17 days ago
If you have received the Janssen (J&J) vaccine

Is it safe to get vaccinated if pregnant or breastfeeding?

Yes, but if you have questions about getting vaccinated, talking with a healthcare provider may might help you make an informed decision.

Can my child get vaccinated?

Currently youth ages 12 and older can receive the Pfizer vaccine with a parent’s permission. Find a location here.

Can the COVID-19 vaccine be given at the same time as another vaccine?

Wait at least 14 days before getting any other vaccine, including a flu or shingles vaccine, if you get your COVID-19 vaccine first. If you get another vaccine first, wait at least 14 days before getting your COVID-19 vaccine.

I have already had COVID-19. Can I still be vaccinated?

Yes. Due to the severe health risks associated with COVID-19 and the fact that reinfection with COVID-19 is possible, you should be vaccinated regardless of whether you already had COVID-19 infection.

How much does it cost? What if my insurance doesn’t cover it?

COIVD-19 vaccines are free – the US Federal Government is purchasing vaccines on behalf of the American people. If you have insurance, it will cover any costs the providers charge for administering the vaccine; if you don’t, the government will pay these.

Do I still need to wear a mask and social distance after receiving the vaccine?

If you are not fully vaccinated (fully vaccinated means it’s been two weeks since you received your second dose of the vaccine), you need to still wear a mask when you are around groups of people and you don’t know whether or not they are all vaccinated. If you are not vaccinated, you should also still get tested for COVID weekly, practice social distancing when possible, and wash your hands often. Here is a list of testing locations.

Will vaccines be mandatory?

No. The federal government does not mandate (require) vaccination for individuals.

Organizations who have been approved by the state to be a vaccine provider may apply here to receive vaccine allocations from Public Health and Wellness.”
